What is 316 Stainless Steel

What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?

Alloys are frequently added into steel to improve its desired properties. It is a marine quality stainless steel is known as Type 316, is resistant to certain types of harsh environments.

There are numerous types made of stainless steel. Some common types are L, F, , and H variations. They are all slightly different and serves distinct purposes. L means that 316L steel is more carbon than the 316.

of 316, 316L and 316 Stainless Steel Common Quality

Although it is similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both have better resistance to corrosion and are more robust in high temperatures. They are not hardened by heat treatment , and can be easily shaped and stretched.

It is not the same as the 316L version. Stainless Steel

The stainless steel 316L has less carbon than 316. However, despite its lesser carbon contents, 316L is very similar to 316 in nearly every way. The cost is similar they are both tough and resistant against corrosion, making an ideal choice for high-stress situations.

However, for projects that require a lot for welding, then 316L is the better choice , as 316L is more susceptible to welding corrosion as compared to it is (corrosion within the weld). However, the 316 can be annealed to protect against the attenuation of welding. It is also a ideal stainless steel to use in high temperatures and high corrosion applications, which is why it's so popular in marine and construction.

No 316, nor 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is similar to the 304L but the price is much lower. The 304 is not as robust as the 317 and 317L as they have more molybdenum in them and better all-around corrosion protection.
